Short explanation
A missing access control in NetBSD's hdaudio(4) driver allows unprivileged local attackers to trigger a use-after-free race condition via HDAUDIO_FGRP_SETCONFIG ioctl, leading to potential privilege escalation or denial of service. A patch exists in the source code.
This vulnerability enables local attackers to bypass privilege checks and potentially escalate privileges or crash the kernel, posing a direct threat to system integrity. Patch availability and source-level fixes confirm mitigation is feasible.
What should be done?
- Apply patch from hdaudio.c source file
- Update to a version post-11 if available via vendor advisory
- Verify patch via official NetBSD repository
The sources give limited detail on some technical conditions. Review the chain of evidence below before deciding how to act.
Chain of evidence and sources
NetBSD'in hdaudio(4) sürücüsü, /dev/hdaudioN cihaz düğümü üzerinde erişim kontrolü eksikliği nedeniyle, yetkisiz yerel saldırıcılara HDAUDIO_FGRP_SETCONFIG ioctl'unu yükseltme izni olmadan çağırma imkanı sunar.
Show the technical text from the sources
NetBSD's hdaudio(4) driver in sys/dev/hdaudio/hdaudio.c contains a missing access control vulnerability that allows unprivileged local attackers to invoke the HDAUDIO_FGRP_SETCONFIG ioctl without elevated permissions by exploiting the absence of an access check on /dev/hdaudioN device nodes. Attackers can repeatedly issue HDAUDIO_FGRP_SETCONFIG from one thread while keeping DMA and IRQs live from a second thread to trigger a use-after-free race condition in hdafg_detach() between stream_stop() and stream_disestablish(), where a latched DMA interrupt dereferences a freed callback pointer, resulting in outcomes ranging from audio-subsystem denial of service and kernel panic to potential local kernel privilege escalation.
